April 14, 2024, New York: Thousands of members from the Sherpa community, alongside other Himalayan community members from the Tri-state area, congregated at Lhapso Land, owned by the United Sherpa Association (USA) Inc., in Wallkill, Upstate New York, to rejoice in the annual Sherpa Lhapso 2151. The event, organized by the United Sherpa Association (USA) Inc., brought together individuals to commemorate their culture, traditions, and spirituality.
The day commenced with a morning Sang Serkim Puja, led by venerable monks, including Tulku Urgen, Khenpo Ngawang Sangay, and Lopen Gyurme Chhodrak. The Puja aimed at fostering world peace and the well-being of all sentient beings. Traditional dances, such as the Serking Dance, Guru Dorje Drolo Dance, and Lion Dance, were performed, infusing the event with vibrant religious and cultural elements.
Highlighting the spiritual essence of the celebration, His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche bestowed the long life Ngiguma empowerment. This empowerment, rooted in the teachings of Vajrayana Buddhism, is believed to bestow blessings for longevity and the continued opportunity to engage in dharma practices. Kalu Rinpoche, recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has been actively involved in spreading Buddhist teachings globally.
Born on September 17, 1990, in Darjeeling, India, the 2nd Kalu Rinpoche has followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, dedicating himself to spiritual study and practice. After completing a traditional three-year retreat in 2008, he received transmissions of the Shangpa Lineage and began teaching and conferring initiations worldwide. His commitment to continuing the legacy of the Kalu Rinpoche lineage has earned him recognition and respect within the Buddhist community.
The event also featured kids’ activities, adding a family-friendly dimension to the festivities. President Mr. Temba Sherpa and Chair of the Board of Trustees Mr. Lhakpa Rinji Sherpa presented certificates to newly nominated board members, including Mr. Jangbu Sherpa (Secretary), Mr. Pasang Nima Sherpa (Deputy Treasurer), Mingma Chhamji Sherpa, Laxmi Sherpa, Jigme Lama, Karma Lama, Ngawang Jimba Sherpa, and Dawa Yangji Sherpa. Additionally, Mr. Tshiring Nurbu Sherpa and venerable monk Ngawang Yonden Lama (Lama Geljen) were honored for their tremendous support towards the United Sherpa Association.
The venue was adorned with Buddhist prayer flags alongside the United States flag, creating a picturesque atmosphere reminiscent of the homeland in Nepal. The celebration concluded with the Sybaru dance, accompanied by music from a DJ, fostering a joyous atmosphere for all attendees.
The Sherpa Lhapso celebration serves as a poignant reminder of the rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions cherished by the Sherpa community.
